The Khilji Dynasty was the second ruling dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate and ruled northern India from 1290 to 1320 CE. It was founded by Jalal-ud-din Khilji, who came to power after the decline of the Mamluk (Gulam) Dynasty. The dynasty significantly expanded the territory and political influence of the Delhi Sultanate. The most prominent ruler was Alauddin Khilji, who ruled from 1296 to 1316 CE. He carried out major military campaigns in northern and southern India and successfully defended the Delhi Sultanate against several Mongol invasions. His generals, including Malik Kafur, led campaigns into the Deccan and southern regions. Alauddin Khilji also introduced important economic and administrative reforms. His government regulated markets, controlled prices of essential goods, reorganized taxation, and strengthened the military. He also implemented measures to limit the power of nobles and maintain greater control over the empire. The Khilji period was an important phase in the expansion and consolidation of the Delhi Sultanate. After Alauddin Khilji's death, political instability weakened the dynasty.
